Location (Not Relevant: Not Relevant: This was considered but decided that it was NOT a relevant factor. All of SMS”s projects are managed out of a single location in Mclean, VA. While some engineers do travel to multiple sites, the location of the project does not make a difference in how the basic unit is managed or what processes are used.)
Customer (Not Relevant: Not Relevant: This was considered but decided that it was NOT a relevant factor. SMS has multiple customers, however, the Quality Management System and processes are applied across all basic units and are not distinguished by customer.)
Size: Size is a relevant factor for consideration for SMS basic units. Basic units with revenue of less than $150,000 are considered small and are exempted from the QMS processes. Basic units with revenue of upto $1,250,000 are considered medium size and are managed in accordance with EP 710 and EP 730. Basic Units with revenue above $1,250,000 are considered LARGE projects and have special risk handling requirements.
Organizational Structure (Not Relevant: Not Relevant: This was considered but decided that it was NOT a relevant factor. All of the projects reside in the same organizational structure, Design Build and report to the Vice President of Engineering and the Service Delivery Director.)
Type of Work: Type of work is a relevant factor. Within the Design Build Group, there are two types of basic units. The first type is the Application Infrastructure (AI) projects which involves network design, installation and testing. The second type is Telecom Infrastrucutre (TI) which involve PBXs, telecommunications, VOIP and cable plant installtions. The engineering processes are different for each of these types of work. |
