Sampling Factors: Location (Not Relevant: All new development, upgrade, and R&D activities are conducted at one location in Ningbo, China. And processes are consistently applied regardless of location.)
Customer (Not Relevant: OU provide services to the healthcare industry and work for all customers is performed according to the organization standard processes. Hence customer is not relevant sampling factor.)
Size (Not Relevant: All projects use the same process regardless of size and size does not alter the life cycle model or project process. In addition, all projects within OU are small to medium. (All of sizes are less than 10 people))
Organizational Structure (Not Relevant: Business Software R&D Center and Zhejiang Delivery Center follow the same OSSP. All projects have the same basic and similar structure with project manager, developers and supporting-members. Consequently organizational structure does not cause significant variations in the performance of processes.)
Type of Work: This is the key distinguishing factor among the projects. There are 3 types of projects, such as “New Development”, “Enhancement & Upgrade”, and “Internal R&D” projects. There are differences among these 3 types of projects from the point of view of engineering processes such as the approach for requirements elicitation and TS, PI, VER, and VAL.
Sampling Factor Values: New Development (Type of Work): New system development project for specific customers. All new development projects form part of this subgroup and they follow the organizational standard set of processes with a little bit of tailoring.
Enhancement & Upgrade (Type of Work): Projects that have completed their initial development activities then pass into a maintenance phase. All these works is done based on some customer service requests. The typical output of this work is enhanced and updated functions. This is the tailored version of the organizational standard engineering process.
Internal R&D (Type of Work): Projects do not have a contractual customer, so they target future market development. They are generally planned by proposals from the Product Delivery Support Team and their related support function teams. The typical output is a product prototype which is developed for future usage. This is the tailored version of the organizational standard engineering process.
